Last week a student gave me this. It’s a vanilla flavoured air freshener.
What could this possibly mean?
Best suggestion so far: Maybe it’s a status symbol in his culture.

This is Lulu, the heart and soul of Le Quesnoy. I recently visited the town, in the North of France, to participate in the ANZAC day commemorations that take place there every year. Le Quesnoy is a fortified village with around 5000 inhabitants that was occupied by the Germans during the First World War. The town is situated in a strategically advantageous position near the borders of Belgium and Germany. The town, along with its inhabitants, was captured for almost the entire duration of the war. Around the time just before the armistice, there were three battalions in the region whose goal was to liberate the occupied territories. Two battalions were from England and one was from New Zealand (and the crowd goes wild).
Due to the fact that so many private citizens were being held inside, there was competition amongst the three battalions to see which could save the town. Naturally, the New Zealand Battalion decided that it would be theirs!
They staged an invasion, scaling the huge battlements that surrounded the entire town, with nothing more than their rifles and helmets to protect them. Long story short, lots of carnage, but eventually liberté was restored to the good folk of Le Quesnoy.
In this video, Lulu is playing for quite a crowd of NZers and French people, who had gathered at the grave of NZ soldiers who had earned medals of valor during the liberation of Le Quesnoy. The guy holding the songbook is a local Military Uniform collector.

I’m still feeling sick. I fought the boredom today by creating a cartoon, Pokemon trainer version of myself. Enjoy.
P.S. If you too would like a Pokemon trainer version of yourself (and let’s face it, who wouldn’t?) just click the image

The holidays, spring, the sunshine and a nasty cold all arrived at the same time for me this week. Here is the tree that I’ve been gazing at from my bed over the past few days.
